Becoming a New Creation in Christ: Kristopher’s Story

Hello, my name is Kristopher L., and I’m a resident in the Steelbridge Ministries program. I’m in the process of becoming a new creation in Christ.

One of the biggest struggles I’ve faced has been finding sobriety in the world compared to being incarcerated. Incarceration provided structure — there weren’t as many temptations or distractions. But coming back into the world brought a whole new set of challenges. There are so many things that test your emotions, self-control, and faith.

Through Steelbridge’s Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), I’ve learned how to face those challenges with the right tools and mindset. IOP has shown me how to remain sober-minded in a world full of temptations.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned in IOP is about SMART goals — setting goals that are realistic and achievable. I used to set big goals that felt so far away, and I’d get discouraged when I couldn’t reach them right away. IOP helped me see the value of starting small, taking baby steps, and celebrating progress along the way.

The program created a classroom environment where I felt comfortable opening up and breaking free from my shell. It’s helped me understand who I am as a person and allowed me to connect with others who’ve faced similar struggles.

I’ve now been sober for three years, and IOP has given me life skills that I use every single day — learning how to manage my emotions, handle difficult situations, and see the world in a more positive light. Most importantly, I’ve learned how to find peace within myself and keep my faith strong, even in temptation.

To all the donors who make Steelbridge possible — thank you. Your generosity has given me, and so many others, the opportunity to rebuild our lives. I’m filled with gratitude for this journey and everything I’ve gained through this ministry.

As I think about how far I’ve come, one question stays in my heart:

“If it weren’t for the doors, where would the seeker knock?”
