HE LOST HIS FAMILY
His dad was a preacher. His grandfather was a pastor. Yet here he was, he had lost his beautiful fiancee and family. She left him because of his addiction to drugs and alcohol. She had enough. She was not going to put her daughter through this.
He was sleeping on the sidewalk. His body was stiff and cold. His back ached from the hard concrete. “What I need is my fix” he thought. That smooth surge of chemicals entering his system numbed him to his pain and loss. It helped him forget he was a young, talented man with a family that loved him and he was wasting his life.
As he was lying there, a Steelbridge staff member approached him. “Are you ok?” the staff member inquired. “Why don’t we get you warmed up and get some food in you?
Before long, he was eating a hot, nutritious meal. The facilities were nice, clean, and warm. “It feels good to sit in a chair.” he thought. Steelbridge staff told him about their men’s residential program. There was no cost to him.
today he wears a shirt and tie
Today, he wears a shirt and tie. He works out with a boxing trainer to keep in shape. He’s sober and thinking so clearly. He has a vision for his future. He helps other men turn their lives around.
Steelbridge donors and volunteers made the difference. They helped this homeless man sleeping on the streets of Albuquerque in a way that is transformational instead of temporary. They got involved.
